What is Barn Sale?

Barn Sale is a high quality consignment and tag sale. Local stores provide us with new clothing and other merchandise, along with items for our raffle. A large assortment of treasures and other goods are consigned or donated from the community.

Hundreds of people come from neighboring communities to shop with us for special items and great bargains.

It is the largest single fellowship activity at the First Congregational Church and the money raised helps to support our church and all its programs.

Barn Sale History

Barn Sale began over fifty years ago in a member’s barn (hence the name) and has run almost every year since then. For many years, Barn Sale was the sole provenance of the Women’s Fellowship, although most congregation members and others in the community joined in. The funds raised were allocated by the Women’s Fellowship to some special project within the church, or to an outreach chosen by the group. With the disbanding of the Women’s Fellowship in the 1970s, no single group retained the responsibility for running the sale. It continued to be run by an ad hoc group of former Women’s Fellowship members.

In the 1980s & 1990s, different people took responsibility for various aspects of the sale under the oversight of the Coordinator of Volunteer Ministries, a staff position. Today it is managed solely by volunteers from the congregation. While the structure of the sale has changed little since its inception, lifestyles and membership have changed greatly. Difficulties have arisen in staffing the sale during workday hours. Now the need is even greater as there are more merchandise offerings each year.

Barn Sale Volunteers

Barn Sale is a great way to meet many members of the congregation on an informal basis, work together, and laugh together.

Please set aside time in your schedule for this very important church event. The majority of work is done during the three weeks at the end of April into early May. Jobs include publicity, soliciting new merchandise, processing consigned and donated merchandise, room setup and clean up, cashiering, security, food service for volunteers and disposal of leftover merchandise.

There are opportunities to help on weekdays, evenings and weekends. There are jobs for all levels of involvement. We have small ones, ones that could be for one hour or the whole week.  We encourage participation by all members of the church and look forward to getting to know you better.

If you would like to volunteer for Barn Sale, please watch for signup sheets during the month of April each year and join in the fun and fellowship!

Members and friends of the congregation and many other community residents participate to make Barn Sale fun for all.

Well over one hundred people will contribute thousands of hours of effort to make it a success.

If you haven't experienced Barn Sale, consider joining us in this rewarding fellowship. Remember, Barn Sale is
